Scientific articles play a fundamental role in recording and disseminating research results, contributing to the expansion of academic literature. However, a research group at USP’s Ribeirão Preto Faculty of Dentistry (Forp) is innovating in this field by developing articles aimed at children and youngsters, broadening the reach and accessibility of science.
This initiative has already published an article on dental regeneration, which can be followed at this link. Now Juliana Gonçalves de Lima, a doctoral student and member of the group, is presenting a new paper: How can the first thousand days of life shape a child’s future health?, published in the journal Frontiers for Young Minds. This journal aims to bring children and scientists closer together by offering scientific content in a more accessible language complemented by illustrations and graphics. In addition, youngsters aged between 8 and 14 review the articles before publication, providing feedback to improve the clarity and understanding of the material.

Francisco Wanderley Garcia de Paula Silva, a professor at Forp and leader of the Developmental Biology and Children’s Health research group, points out the importance of awakening an interest in science from an early age: “When the content is presented in a clear and engaging way, children feel encouraged to explore, ask questions and develop a natural curiosity about the world in which they live.” According to him, this early contact is essential for the development of critical and analytical skills, which are fundamental for personal and civic development throughout life.
Paula Silva emphasizes that the publication of scientific materials aimed at children and youngsters contributes to scientific literacy and reinforces the need to understand scientific concepts in contemporary society. “This initiative facilitates learning in the main areas of knowledge and also helps to develop informed citizens, capable of making decisions based on scientific evidence, such as on issues related to their own health,” she explains.
In addition to impacting children’s education, the professor points out that these articles can be valuable tools for schools, parents, and educators. “The article provides essential information on how experiences and the environment influence children’s health and development. Addressing aspects such as nutrition, proper care, and the importance of a healthy environment helps parents and teachers better understand their role in the upbringing of children,” he says.

Thus, although it differs from traditional academic literature, whose main focus is the meticulous presentation of data and in-depth analysis, scientific articles with an educational approach aimed at children play a fundamental role in shaping critical thinking and building a scientific knowledge foundation from childhood.
The work also included the participation of dental surgeon and researcher Maya Fernanda Manfrin Arnez. Check out the article at this link.
