“This year, Times Higher Education adopted a new evaluation methodology and, of the five dimensions evaluated, in addition to Teaching, USP obtained excellent scores in the Research Environment, Research Quality, and Industry criteria, which this year included a new Patents indicator, which contributed to USP’s good performance in this area. This shows that we are on the right track by promoting projects to encourage research and innovation, such as the recent creation of the Special Research and Innovation Centers. In addition, we have encouraged partnerships with the public and private sectors in order to bring academia ever closer to society,” said President Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior.

Brazil has seven of the top ten ranked universities. In addition to USP, the top 10 include State University of Campinas (2nd place), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (3rd), State University of São Paulo (5th), Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (6th), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (7th) and Federal University of Santa Catarina (10th).

The ranking evaluated 214 universities from 16 Latin American countries. The criteria adopted are the same as those applied in THE’s world ranking, but with modifications to better reflect the characteristics of higher education institutions in the region. Brazil is the country with the largest number of universities evaluated: 70 in total, followed by Colombia, with 38 universities, and Chile, with 32 representatives.
