USP adopts Inclusion and Belonging Policy for Persons with Disabilities
In addition to the policy for people with disabilities, the Office of the Provost for Inclusion and Belonging has also defined the rules for requests for adaptations to the routines of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the University
USP has established guidelines for the development of academic and administrative actions aimed at the Inclusion and Belonging Policy for Persons with Disabilities (PwD). A resolution issued by the Office of the Provost for Inclusion and Belonging (PRIP), published at the end of February, formalized these guidelines, considering fundamental principles of human rights and accessibility, and aligning with major national and international regulations
The policy is founded on the principle that people with disabilities have the right to quality education, free from discrimination and with equal opportunities, and that the University must ensure their full participation in daily life, fostering the development of their potential and valuing their unique abilities.
“USP has always had policies aimed at the PwD community. With the publication of this resolution, we institutionalized and standardized the guidelines for the entire University, making it possible to develop broader and more effective actions,” emphasizes Ana Lanna, Provost for Inclusion and Belonging.
Topics addressed in the document include architectural and communication accessibility, use of assistive technologies, educational inclusion, combating disability-based discrimination, and promoting autonomy and full participation in academic life.
PRIP is also establishing the Chamber for Policies on the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities within the Inclusion and Belonging Council (CoIP), a space dedicated to formulating, monitoring, and enhancing institutional strategies for accessibility and inclusion.
This entity will be responsible for, among other things, proposing guidelines to ensure the policy’s effectiveness at the University, analyzing and recommending actions to improve support for people with disabilities, and fostering innovative initiatives to make USP a more accessible environment
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Focusing specifically on individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), PRIP developed an inclusion policy that establishes procedures and pathways for routine adjustment requests for students, faculty, and administrative staff with ASD. This policy promotes reasonable accommodations that ensure better working or academic conditions.
“This Ordinance provides academic units and undergraduate committees with practical adaptation options and clear instructions for submitting requests,” explains the Provost.
Now, requests for recognition of an ASD diagnosis and plans for adjusting study or work routines must be submitted to the Inclusion and Belonging Commissions of the respective units or departments, along with a medical certificate indicating the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) code for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Adaptations may include, for example, using larger fonts on slides, adjusting exams, or diversifying teaching strategies.
The requests will be evaluated by the CIP, which will inform professors responsible for courses or the direct supervisors of the approved accommodations. The Inclusion and Belonging Commission is also responsible for publicizing the policy and guiding units on the specifics of ASD, helping to prevent any form of discrimination.
