Ranked 61st, USP is the highest-ranked Latin American research institution in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), a Spanish ranking published annually by the research group SCImago Lab, affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – CSIC). 

When compared to other universities, USP ranks 29th, ahead of institutions such as Yale University, Duke University, and the University of Sydney.

The ranking evaluates higher education and research institutions by using a composite indicator that combines three different sets of metrics based on research performance, innovation outputs, and social impact as measured by web visibility.

A distinguishing feature of this ranking is that it evaluates not only universities but also other entities engaged in research, such as companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. In this edition, 9,756 institutions from around the world were evaluated, including 5,051 universities.

In the overall ranking, the top three institutions were the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1st place), the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (2nd place), and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (3rd place). Considering only universities, Harvard University ranks first, followed by the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University.
