Registration is now open for the new edition of the São Paulo Innovation and Science Diplomacy School (InnSciD SP), the first school in the global South dedicated to science and innovation diplomacy. USP and the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) launched the initiative in 2019. With the theme Global Health and Climate Change, InnSciD 2025 will be held between August 4 and 8, in a hybrid format, with in-person lectures from August 4 to 6, and online on August 7 and 8.
The event is a partnership with Science Arena and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, which will host part of the schedule at its Albert Einstein Teaching and Research Center – Cecilia and Abram Szajman Campus in São Paulo. Registration is open until July 25 and must be completed via form. The announcement of selected participants will be made on July 28. The lectures will be given in English.
The goal is to address the issue from the perspective of scientific diplomacy and innovation. This means discussing how diplomacy intervenes in matters involving climate and health, based on regulations, protocols and international actions. “We arrived at the 7th edition taking a more accurate look at the intersection between global health and climate change, in view of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change – COP30, scheduled for November in Pará,” Amâncio Jorge de Oliveira explains, InnSciD SP’s executive coordinator and professor at the Center for Studies of International Negotiations (Caeni) of the Institute of International Relations (IRI) at USP.
This year’s schedule will address a wide range of topics, including: The Evolution of Science Diplomacy; Anticipatory Approaches to Health and Climate Governance; International Scientific Cooperation; Integrated Policy Responses; and the Role of the Global South in Building Inclusive and Sustainable Scientific Agendas. Special attention will also be given to the Brazilian scientific ecosystem, along with international case studies in environmental diplomacy, science policy, and public health innovation. “The course includes lectures, debates and high-level panels with renowned international experts,” Oliveira says.
“Participants will have the opportunity to gain relevant insights into how scientific collaboration and diplomacy can contribute to addressing one of today’s most pressing issues: the impact of climate change, connected to human actions, on global health,” explains the professor. For him, the partnership with Science Arena is fundamental, as the publication has dedicated to covering health and climate collapse. “Einstein’s collaboration is also significant, as it is a philanthropic organization dedicated to discussing and understanding the consequences of the climate crisis on global health.”
This year’s edition is organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA) at USP, in collaboration with Caeni, the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Human Sciences (FFLCH), and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). The event also receives support from several institutional partners, including Science Arena – a nonprofit science journalism initiative by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein – the José Luiz Setúbal Foundation, Inova USP (Research and Innovation Center), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the São Paulo State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation.
