On August 1, directors of institutes linked to the legal field of the Max Planck Society, a German research organization, visited the University and met with President Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior.
Present at the meeting were Armin von Bogdandy, Director of the Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law; Thomas Duve, Director of the Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory; and Ralf Poscher, Director of the Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law. They also met with professors from the USP’s Law School (FD) to discuss opportunities for joint research, researcher exchange, and collaboration in the legal field. FD professors Fernando Menezes, Samuel Rodrigues Barbosa, Juliana Krueger Pela, Sheila Neder Cerezetti, and Thiago Saddi Tannous also took part in the discussions.
Another topic addressed was the possibility of creating an international research center of the Max Planck Society at USP. “Collaboration between the University of São Paulo and German universities and institutes is already very strong. However, we would like to further strengthen this connection, establishing a relationship not only between researchers but also between institutions. The idea is to have researchers from Germany here at the University, working alongside our students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors,” said the President.
The visit was also an opportunity for Tobias Renghart, Policy Advisor for Research and External Relations of the Max Planck Society in Latin America, to learn more about the University and prepare the agenda for the visit of Max Planck Society President Patrick Cramer, scheduled for October.
For Fernando Menezes, who also serves as Administrative Director of the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp), “initiatives like this are strategically important for consolidating a new level of internationalization of research activities at institutions in São Paulo, a goal strongly encouraged by Fapesp.”
In parallel with these discussions, researchers from the University of São Paulo Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MAE) are also negotiating collaboration with one of the Max Planck institutes — in this case, focused on biogeochemistry, with applications in archaeology and anthropology.
Max Planck Society
Founded in 1948, the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science is one of the most renowned research organizations in the world, with 31 Nobel Prizes in the natural sciences.
In addition to five institutes abroad, the Max Planck Society maintains 15 other Max Planck Centers in collaboration with research institutions outside Germany, including Harvard University in the United States, ETH Zurich in Switzerland, University College London in England, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. There are also two partner institutes, located in Shanghai, China, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Cooperation with Latin America has been strengthened in recent years and is coordinated through a regional office. Long-term collaborations are also in place, such as the Atto tower, which conducts climate measurements in Brazil, and the Apex telescope in Chile.
