Professor Leonardo Coelho Rabello de Lima, from USP’s School of Physical Education and Sports – Ribeirão Preto (EEFERP), has joined a select international group of researchers as a Fellow of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS). The title is awarded to researchers who, according to the institution, have made “significant contributions to the development of sports science through research and have offered valuable support to the college”.
In scientific circles, the title of Fellow is an honorary distinction awarded to professionals with outstanding performance and a consolidated career in their field. For the ECSS, it is recognition for researchers who act as leaders and mentors in sports science. For the professor, his appointment marks a milestone in his academic career and signals that Brazilian scientific production in the field has achieved increasing visibility and respect abroad. “An important point in this process is that only two Brazilians are currently Fellows of the college: Professor Marco Túlio de Mello, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and, now, me,” he adds.
The process for obtaining the title is rigorous and requires, among other criteria, proof of years of active participation in the college as a member, regular attendance at congresses promoted by the organization, mentoring of new talents in the area, publication of at least 15 international scientific articles in a leading position (as first or second author), as well as letters of recommendation signed by two Fellows already in office.
Lima holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s and PhD in Human Development and Technology from the Rio Claro campus of Unesp. He is currently a professor at EEFERP and leads the Study Group in Myology Applied to Exercise (MioEx). He is also a researcher at the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University in Australia. His work focuses on Exercise Physiology, with an emphasis on eccentric exercise, exercise-induced muscle damage, post-activation performance enhancement, street running, and human performance.
European College of Sport Science
Founded in 1995, the ECSS is one of the most important scientific organizations dedicated to the study of sport, exercise, and health. Bringing together researchers, professionals, and institutions worldwide, the college’s mission is to promote sports science in its multiple dimensions – from the performance of elite athletes to the benefits of physical exercise for the general population.
The title of Fellow is granted to members who demonstrate continued excellence in scientific research, education, and service to the scientific community. In addition to personal recognition, Fellows contribute directly to the College’s mission, acting as mentors, evaluators, and leaders in their respective areas of expertise.
