USP should have a new international center in the second half of 2025, with the inauguration of a branch of the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRAe, in its French acronym), a French public scientific entity focused on research in agronomy, on the USP campus in Piracicaba.
The agreement was signed on January 9th at the institute’s headquarters in Paris. The signing ceremony was attended by the President of USP, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior; the chairman of São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp), Marco Antonio Zago; the international vice-president of INRAe, Jean-François Soussana; the institute’s scientific director, Thierry Caquet; the dean of the School of Agriculture “Luiz de Queiroz” (Esalq), Thais Vieira; and the professor of the Faculty of Zootechnics and Food Engineering (FZEA), Flávio Vieira Meirelles.
“This new center, which Fapesp will fund, represents an essential partnership with INRAe, one of France’s main funders of agricultural research. Based in Piracicaba, [the center] will make it possible to develop cutting-edge studies with Esalq, which is currently INRAe’s main collaborator in Brazil; with the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (Cena); with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (FMVZ); and with FZEA, in addition to other USP Teaching and Research Units that carry out research in the area of food, such as the Faculty of Public Health (FSP) and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FCF),” says the USP president.
The INRAe branch on the Piracicaba campus will be the fourth international center based at USP, which already has the Pasteur Institute, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS, in the French acronym) and the International Center for Planetary Health with the Max-Planck Institute.
