USP and the company ExxonMobil signed a research, development, and innovation contract to promote projects that optimize process parameters in weldability and pipe bending for hydrogen gas transportation. The purpose of the agreement is to expand technical and scientific knowledge in the country’s energy sector. The ceremony that formalized the signing of the agreement was held in the main administration building of the School of Engineering of USP, on the USP campus in São Paulo.

The director of ExxonMobil, Márcio Bastos, highlighted the company’s opportunity to develop projects and work together with various Brazilian institutions, especially USP. “We understand the relevance of the University in the global academic scenario and, with this agreement, we can work in partnership on the themes of energy transition and sustainability of our country,” he said.

The director of School of Engineering, Reinaldo Giudici, reiterated the need for research coordination focused on the optimization of hydrogen transportation, as “these are topics directly linked to innovation and the development of essential pillars, such as those of the Brazilian energy matrix,” he comments.

According to ExxonMobil’s Research and Development consultant, Tatiana Rocha, there is a specific piece of equipment for use in the project in question, which is widely used in foreign universities. “It performs a simulation of this transport and, with that, it is possible to understand which regions of the pipes are most susceptible to failure, greatly facilitating our work.”

At the ceremony, the coordinator of the research, development and innovation project, Sérgio Duarte Brandi, and the chief executive officer of USP Support Foundation, Marcílio Alves, were also present.
